What are Display Energy Certificates?
A Display Energy Certificate (DEC) shows the energy performance of a building, based on an operational rating on a graphical scale, rating from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). A DEC will be required if:
- The building is frequently visited by the public
- The building is publicly funded
- The building has a total floor area of over 250sqm
A DEC must be accompanied by a Recommendation Report (RR) which outlines how an organisation can reduce their energy consumption.
Renewal Timescales
If the property has a total usable floor area of between 250sqm and 1000sqm, both the DEC and RR are valid for 10 years. However, if the total usable floor area is over 1000sqm the DEC is valid for 12 months and the RR for 7 years. The DEC must be clearly visible to the public eye.
Penalties
If an organisation does not have a valid DEC, they may face a penalty of up to £500. If an organisation does not have a valid RR, they may face a penalty of up to £1000.
